Bulgaria, Kingdom. An Army Officer’s Dagger
This is an extremely well-preserved Second War period Bulgarian Army officer’s dagger, of German manufacture, likely Eickhorn, constructed of nickel-plated steel, measuring 400 mm in length inclusive of the scabbard. The magnetic blade, measuring 250 mm in length, features a sharpened tip and semi-sharpened edges. The crossguard features intricate designs, bearing a Bulgarian-style lion rampant on a shield on the obverse, a Maltese Cross pierced by crossed swords on the reverse, and is flanked by dual stylized lion heads. A band of oak leaves transitions into a pale orange knotted celluloid handle. The dagger completes with a pommel surrounded by oak leaves with a semi-flattened tip. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of pebbled magnetic metal and measuring 285 mm in length. The dagger is surrounded by two bands bearing stylized oak leaves with loops for the accommodation of a dagger hanger. The throat of the scabbard is held together by a single rivet, and retains a functional spring catch, holding the dagger securely in place during storage. Minor tarnishing is evident throughout, the blade bears light running marks, but the dagger is in otherwise near extremely fine condition.
