Croatia, Independent State. An Unique Order of King Zvonimir, Golden Grand Cross Star with Swords, c.1945
Instituted by Act No LXVII-333-D.V.-1945 dated 10 th April 1945. (Zlatni velered,Danica). An eight-pointed radiant gilt star with faceted arms, the obverse with a central applique consisting of a Croatian Cross with white enamels, in turn bearing a gilded Latin Cross, overlaid by a gilt medallion with a white enameled centerpiece, with a gilded Crown of Zvonimir in the center, with crossed swords piercing the centre of the medallion, reverse with a barrel hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a round wire catch, unmarked, measuring 94.95 mm (w) x 95.76 mm (h), weighing 85.2 grams, cracking and flecking of enamels evident, in addition to some loss of gilt,in fine condition. Unmarked, but without doubt manufactured by Knaus, Zagreb.
Footnote: This is the only known example, probably a prototype (pattern). There is no evidence that any Golden Grand Crosses were ever awarded.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
