Czechoslovakia, Protectorate of Bohemia & Moravia. A Protectorate of Bohemia & Moravia Gendarmerie Helmet, c.1940
This is an extremely well-preserved, Second War period Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia Gendarmerie helmet, constructed of a field-grey pressed fibre material. The helmet features a protruding frontal visor with a similar construct at the reverse providing partial neck protection. Pinned into the centre of the front is a plate illustrating the coat of arms of the Protectorate, depicting Czech lion rampants and imperial eagles, laying upon an angled square with linden leaves on each of the four sides. The raised spine of the helmet is constructed of a two-part silvered metal strip running from the top of the helmet plate to its conclusion at the outer edge of the neck guard, the top portion of which features a repeating linden leaf design. The same type repeating linden leaf design appears on the silvered metal strip that runs along the base edge of the dome around the circumference, with all the strips held in place by small rivets. The silvered metal cockades on either side are in the form of a raised lion's head, with posts that run from the lion's chin, wrapping around the side brim and terminating at the outer edge, held in place by silvered bronze slotted inserts which are visible on the underside, the slotted inserts designed to incorporate a chinstrap. The outer edge of the helmet is protected by a strip of silvered stripping that runs along the circumference. The underside of the visor and neck guard are lined with the same field-grey felt found on the exterior. Above each cockade are two ventilation holes reinforced with metal eyelets. The interior has a 38 mm-wide, tan-coloured leather sweatband. The dome is lined in brownish-green cotton twill. Stamped on the underside of the visor is “SLT 1” and numbers “5”, “43”, and “55”. The helmet is otherwise unmarked and measures 220 mm (w) x 286 mm (l) x 158 mm (h). The chinstrap is missing and there is minor fatigue to the exterior material, but the helmet is in an otherwise near extremely fine condition.
