Denmark, Kingdom. An Order of the Dannebrog, I Class Commander's Star, by P. Hertz, c.1900

(Dannebrogordenen). Instituted in 1671 by Christian V. In silver, a stylized concave Latin Cross with etched patterns-body, exhibiting a delicate gilded outsider edge together with an interior enameled red border, obverse presenting central crowned letter W for King Waldemar II monogram, accompanying by gilt letters OG GUD KON GEN (God and the King), reverse with dual prong pinback and catch, hallmarked twice by duty import Dutch hallmark symbolsing .250 silver fineness between 1893-1905, marked by maker’s mark of P. Hertz, Copenhagen, together with second worn/indecipherable mark on the pin, measuring 59.02 mm (w) x 74.21 mm (h), with general toned silver and faded enamels, presenting minor oxidation on the pin and gilt loss, near good.

Footnote: Believed to have originally been established by King Waldemar II in 1219, and later re-instituted by King Christian V, in honour of the birth of his first son (King Frederik IV) in 1671, this Order originally consisted of one class and was conferred upon noblemen, princes of royal blood, and high dignitaries.Today, it is a awarded in honor of the faithful servants of the modern Danish state for meritorious civil or military service, for a particular contribution to the arts, sciences or business life or for those working for Danish interests.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
