(Dannebrogordenen Ridderkorset). Instituted 12 October 1671 by Christian V. Christian X period (1912-1947 issue). Of French manufacture, consisting of an enameled white red-bordered Latin Cross in silver gilt, the quadrants with stylized gilded crowns, suspended from monogram of King Christian X and a Danish royal crown, both also in silver gilt, the obverse with gilt inscription of “GUD OG KONGEN” (“GOD AND THE KING”) with central royal monogram of Christian V, the reverse with royal monograms in the centre and 12 o’clock arm, for Waldemar II and Frederick VI respectively, flanked by dates of “1219” and “1671”, with bottom date of “1808”, marked by French hallmark denoting silver purity of .800 between 1838-1962, measuring 32.35 mm (w) x 62.34 mm (h - inclusive of suspension), on original breast ribbon, with general gilt loss, enamel contact, remains in good condition.
Footnote: Believed that the Order of Dannebrog was instituted by King Christian V in 1671 as a revival of an alleged older order instituted by King Valdemar Sejr in 1219. It was originally consisted of one class and was conferred upon noblemen, princes of royal blood, and high dignitaries. In order of precedence, this Order is the second highest decoration in Denmark, next lower of the Order of the Elephant.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
