A French Egyptian Institute (Institut d'Egypte) Medal - Silver, cornucopia hallmarked and marked "ARGENT" (silver) on the edge, 37.5 mm, silver star on the original ribbon, extremely fine. Footnote: The Institut d'Egypte was a learned academy formed by Naopleon Bonaparte, to carry out research during his Egyptian campaign. It first met on August 24, 1798, with Gaspard Monge as president, Bonaparte himself as vice-president, Joseph Fourier and Costaz as secretaries and forty-eight scholars. The Institut capitalized on the work of scholars and technical experts of the Commission des Sciences et des Arts and fostered the development of Egypt, so as to support the French Expeditionary Force. It lasted until its forty-seventh and final meeting, on March 21, 1801.
