What's a max bid?

France, II Empire. A Legion of Honour in Gold, Commander, c.1860

(Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur). 1852-1870 Issue. A superb commander's badge in Gold, consisting of a five armed white enamelled cross with ball finials and Gold borders, with finely enamelled green laurels in each quadrant, obverse centre presenting a bust of Napoleon, blue enamel surround inscribed NAPOLEON EMP.DES FRANCIS, reverse centre presenting the French Imperial Eagle with blue enamel surround with inscription HONNEUR ET PATRIE, adorned by an expertly manufactured crown composed of eight half arches with multiple imperial eagles, with finely enameled integral suspension bands, measures 58.60mm (w) x 87.15mm (h – inclusive of cross adorned crown suspension), weighs 44.6 grams, with elongated double loop suspension, marked with Gold eagle head hallmark on the suspension ring and the 6 o’clock ribbon bow denoting manufacture from 1847-1919, guarantee for minimum 750/1000 purity, enamel wear to wreath and hairline cracks through white enamel arms, an early decoration in extremely fine condition. Accompanied by a section of red ribbon of the order.

 

Footnote: The Legion of Honour was proposed by Napoleon Bonaparte to the First Council, to create a reward to commend civilians and soldiers who had served the Republic, promoted republican principles and French interests. The Legion would ensure political loyalty and unity among the new French Republic.
