France, Republic. A Privately Commissioned St. George Slaying the Dragon Collar Chain
The collar chain contains fourteen crosses in bronze gilt, each cross with a four-piece construction, the obverse centrepiece illustrating St. George Slaying the Dragon within a beaded border, each of the four arms on the cross exhibit a pattern incorporating a series of scales, the reverse cartouche plain, measuring approximately 41 mm (w) x 45 mm (h) each inclusive of the dual integral rings at either end. The crosses are joined to each other via two silver gilt strands, the inside strand with three links, the outside strand with five links. There is a large bronze gilt ring with a u-shaped hook at the mid-point of the chain that appears at the back of the wearer's neck, the large ring connected to the chain in two locations via a single link attached to a strand with seven links, the full-length of the chain measures 820 mm. Light contact, better than very fine. In its hardshelled case, wooden-framed, cornflower blue cloth exterior on all sides, the lid designed with bevelled edges, the inside of the lid lined in a light gray cloth fabric that exhibits a wavy pattern throughout, giving it a moiré-look and is padded, the medal bed recessed in an oval configuration with a series of ridges, conforming to the shapes evident in the collar chain and employs the same gray cloth fabric as that used on the inside of the lid, with a white cardboard liner framing the medal bed, dual-clasp closure, dual-hinged, measuring 320 mm (w) x 350 mm (h) x 40 mm (d), exhibiting light soiling and discolouration on the lid and sides, a few marks on the bottom, wear evident in the fabric overlying the hinged area, case fine.
