France, II Empire. A Legion D'Honneur in Gold, Officer "La Presidence" with 2nd Empire Centers
Officer’s badge in Gold and enamels, 43.0m (x 66.0mm including crown suspension), with Gold hallmark (ram’s head); badge is textbook Model "La Presidence" (1851) with crown arches in shape of leaves, with centers being type of the Second Empire (1852); hand chiseled badge of excellent quality, slight enamel flaking on reverse, with original period ribbon, in near extremely fine condition and very attractive; these badge was mainly awarded for Crimean Wars against the Russian Empire. Footnote: it was a common practice for the Officer’s and Men to replace centers of the badges to reflect loyalty to the new Regime (or new Emperor in this case), hence we often find older models of the Legion D'Honneur with later centers.
