France, II Empire. An Order of the Legion of Honour, Commander in Gold, c.1855
(Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur). Instituted May 19, 1802. (1852-1870). In 18K Gold, a white enamelled Maltese cross with ball finials, a green enamelled wreath in each quadrant, the obverse medallion presents the right facing portrait of Napoleon, surrounded by a blue enamel ring inscribed NAPOLEON EMP. DES FRANCAIS, the reverse medallion presents an eagle, surrounded by a blue enamel ring inscribed HONNEUR ET PATRIE, surmounted by a Gold crown with eagle details on the arches and red, blue and green details, measures 60.5mm (w) x 89.0mm (h), 46.4 grams, marked with a French eagle’s head on the ribbon tassels denoting 18K Gold content since 1838, marked on the suspension ring with a boars head denoting French manufacture and 800 silver fineness of the ring, accompanied by two segments of original neck ribbon (ripped), minor enamel flaws on the arms and crown details, in extremely fine condition.
