A French Air Force NCO's Dagger
This is fine French Air Force NCO dagger as it appears on page 108 of Robert Berger’s “World of Dress Daggers”. All fittings have a squared-off design, including the sheath and grip. The grip is constructed of a dark blue celluloid material with brass fittings. The crossguard below is very simple with two short quillons and squared ends. The scabbard is constructed of wood with dark blue leather and squared-off brass fittings with brass eyelets and carrying rings. Attached to the rings are a matching set of dark blue dagger hangers with brass fittings to attach to the dagger. The reverse of the grip has a “U” fitting, with a matching dark blue non commissioned officer portepee. The blade is a nickel plates example, having double edged construction with center ridge. The ricasso is short and has the name of the producer, “Beraudy-Vaure -65- Ambert”. There is a small spring assembly installed on the left and right edge of the blade, which keeps the dagger within the scabbard. These daggers were first produced in 1934, but they were worn through the 1950’s. It is impossible to date this peace but it appears to be a post Second War example. Measurements: Blade - 26 cm, Dagger - 40.5 cm, Dagger hangers - 34.5 cm and 27 cm, Portepee - 16.5 cm as it hangs off the daggers.
