Footnote: Josef “Sepp” Dietrich (1892–1966) was an Oberst-Gruppenführer and Colonel General of the Waffen-SS. He was one of only 27 recipients of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. In the 1920s, he worked as Hitler’s chauffeur and bodyguard. In the early 1930s, he became the commander of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH). Later he led the 1st SS Panzer Corps, then the 5th Panzer Army, and eventually the 6th Panzer Army.
