Germany, Luftwaffe. A Handwritten Postwar POW Camp Letter from Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring
(Nachkriegs-Brief). An interesting and extremely well-preserved postwar handwritten letter from Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesslring. It includes its period original envelope, constructed of off-white paper and issued from POW Camp 373 in Wolfsberg, Austria (formerly Wehrmacht POW camp Stalag XVIII-A). Featuring Kesselring’s handwritten signature, it is addressed to his wife Luise Anne Pauline (“Liny”) and is postage stamped 19 August 1947. The letter consists of two paper pages, one large and one small, folded with double-sided handwriting for a total of six pages. It is dated 10 August 1947 and similarly addressed to Liny Kesselring. The letter details Kesselring’s thoughts and state of health after his death sentence for war crimes was commuted the previous month to life imprisonment, when he also declined to participate in an escape attempt organized by former SS personnel, feeling that escape was tantamount to an admission of guilt. The letter measures 158 mm (w) x 208 mm (h) as presented. A central folding crease is visible to the letter, and there is some soiling of the envelope, but it is in an overall extremely fine condition.
