(Waffen-SS Todesanzeige). Constructed of card stock, the obverse bearing a black-and-white photo of Reimond Tollenaere in a Flemish National Union (VNV) uniform, above a name and brief description of service, the reverse with Dutch-language Bible passages, measuring 115 mm (w) x 70 mm (h), a rare death card in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Reimond Tollenaere was born on 29 June 1909 in Oostakker, Belgium. Active in the Flemish national movement, he joined the Flemish National Union (VNV), becoming head of propaganda and entering the Belgian Parliament in 1936. During the German invasion of Belgium in May 1940, he was arrested as a suspected collaborator and jailed in France. He was released after Germany’s victory over French forces, and resumed his political activities. At the start of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, he began recruiting Flemish volunteers to fight on the Eastern Front, eventually enlisting himself. He was killed by friendly fire in the vicinity of Leningrad on 22 January 1942, after being caught in a mis-directed artillery barrage fired by the Spanish Blue Division.
