A German Day of Mourning Card; First War Soldiers
A Day of Commemoration of Heroes card, 14.9 x 10.4 cm. Date of item: Period of Nazi Germany. Condition: good, signs of aging, slight rip. A card celebrating the Heldengedenktag (Day of Commemoration of Heroes). It was first instituted as Volkstrauertag (People’s Mourning Day) during the Weimar Republic, in memory of the fallen soldiers in WWI. It was supposed to be observed quietly and respectfully. The Nazis gave it a new name and a new meaning, making it a propaganda event and celebration for heroes in the field rather than the dead. After the war the original name and meaning was reinstated. It is celebrated on the Sunday two weeks before first advent. The card states: Eternally lasts the glory of the deeds of the dead! It goes on to say that on the Day of Commemoration of Heroes the Nazi Party (NSDAP) lowers its flags in reverence and proud mourning for all fallen German soldiers and remembers them in gratitude. The sacrifice that the dead made by giving their lives, it continues, obliges the Germans to win the war against the enemies that want to see them perish. It ends with the set phrase “Heil Hitler” and is signed by an Ortsgruppenleiter (Local Group Leader).
