A Soldbuch to SS Estonian Volunteer Ülo Vahkal who Died of Wounds in 1945

Book size 10.4 x 14.5 cm; solid cover and spine, a few fragile pages otherwise in fine condition. An SS pay book for SS volunteer sapper Ülo Vahkal from Estonia. He was born in Laeva, and, before the war, worked as a motorist. He wasn’t married. His father, August Vahkal, was a farmer. His mother was Alma Vahkal, nee Reimund. The pay book was issued on November 16, 1943. Vahkal served in the SS-Grenadier Ausbildungs- und Ersatz-Bataillon 33 (SS grenadier drill and reserve battalion 33), which was established in November 1943 near Krakow (modern day Poland) as part of the Estonian Legion. Vahkal was hospitalised in March 1944, again in July 1944, and in August 1944. He stayed in the Reserve-Lazarett (reserve military hospital) II Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany until March 7, 1945, when he died.
