The Soldbuch is dated to April 25, 1940. Measuring 105 mm (w) x 145 mm (h), with extensive creasing and scuffing of the cover, and minor water damage. Repaired, remaining in fine condition. The ID photo of Schmelzer is missing. The Soldbuch comes with research on Schmelzer’s unit from the previous owner.

 

Footnote: Jakob Schmelzer was born on June 11, 1908. He served in the 11th Infantry Division. Among his units were Aufklärungs-Abteilung (Reconnaissance Battalion) 11 and Füsilier Battalion 11. Schmelzer was promoted to Oberschütze (Private 1st Class) on December 20, 1940, and to Gefreiter (Lance Corporal) on June 1, 1942. He took part in the attack on Russia and was awarded the Eastern Front Medal on July 30, 1942. His highest decoration was the Iron Cross 2nd Class, received on August 11, 1943. Schmelzer received his final promotion on October 1, 1943 when he was made an Obergefreiter (Corporal). He was admitted to hospital three times, the first time from February 29, 1944 to March 4, 1944 for being shot. For this, he received the Wound Badge in Black on March 20, 1944. The reason for his second stay between March 26 and April 25, 1944 is unknown. Schmelzer was shot again and treated in hospital between February 2 and 17, 1945.
