A Death Notice of Condor Legion Luftwaffe Ace and Knight’s Cross Recipient Generalleutnant Adolf Galland

This is a death notice of Condor Legion Luftwaffe Ace and Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds recipient, General Lieutenant Adolf Galland. The notice reads “General Lieutenant Adolf Galland, March 19, 1912 - February 9, 1996; Bearer of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, as well as other high awards- In love and thankfulness, Heidi Galland (born Horn), Andreas und Heike Galland with David, Alexandra Galland, Claudia, Beate und Marco with their respective families - 53424 Remagen-Oberwinter Eifelweg 26. The solemn obsequy will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 1996, at 2pm in the St. Laurentius church in Remagen-Oberwinter. Subsequently, the burial will take place on the Oberwinter cemetery. He document measures 193 mm x 138 mm, and is in near mint condition, with having lost some of the black ink around the border of the notice. Footnote: Adolf Joseph Ferdinand Galland (March 19, 1912 - February 9, 1996 was a Luftwaffe General and Flying Ace, flying over 705 combat missions during the Spanish Civil War, the Polish Campaign, Battle of Belgium, Battle of France, the Battle of Britain, the Western Front, as well as during the Final Defence of the Reich. He was shot down on four occasions, surviving all of them. He was a close friend with Hermann Göring but fell out of favour when Galland criticized Göring’s use of the Luftwaffe. He survived the war and worked for the Argentinian Air Force for a short period of time. Throughout his career he was awarded the Medal for the Campaign of 1936-1939, Spanish Military Medal with Diamonds, Spanish Cross in Gold with Swords and Diamonds (June 6, 1939), Front Flying Clasp of the Luftwaffe in Gold with Pennant, Wound Badge in Black, Pilot/Observer Badge in Gold with Diamonds (August 1940), Iron Cross 1939 (2nd Class - September 13, 1939) (1st Class May 22, 1940), Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, Wehrmacht Long Service Award 4th Class, and he was mentioned in the Wehrmachtbericht seven times.
