A Luftwaffe Honour Document from Banak Airfield, Occupied Norway

A certificate awarding the honour name “Banake”, measuring 210x296mm, near mint condition with minor wrinkling. Banak is an airport in northern Norway which the German Luftwaffe used during the occupation of Norway. The document states that the “Chieftain of the Banaks”, the “German aviation people” closest to the north pole, is awarding the honourary name of “Banak” to Gefreiter (Lance Corporal) Wilhelm Peters for enduring the conditions of this most northerly outpost from September 1, 1942 to November 4, 1942. The document is dated to November 4, 1942 and signed in black ink by the “Chieftain of the Banaks”. Unfortunately, the name is indecipherable. It might be Harrhies or similar. It is safe to say that this award should not be taken too seriously, as it seems to have been intended as more of a moral booster for the troops than for any actual achievements.
