Footnote: Karl Stingl (1894–1976) first joined the Bavarian army in 1913. During the First World War he served in the 10th Bavarian Infantry Regiment where he was promoted to Lieutenant. After the war he joined the police before re-entering the army. The highest rank he reached was Major General in 1944. He commanded several Infantry Regiments, and towards the end of the war the 16th Panzergrenadier Division. At the end of the war he was taken prisoner by the Russians, and returned home in 1950. Wilhelm Stemmermann (1888–1944 KIA), holding the rank of General at the time of death, was posthumously awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight’s Cross for his leadership role during the escape from the Korsun-Cherkassy Pocket, which he did not survive.
