Germany, Kriegsmarine. A Posthumous U-Boat War Badge Award Document & Death Notice (KIA), 1943
The posthumous U-boat War Badge is named to Bootsmannsmaat (Boatswain’s Mate, lowest NCO rank) Heinz Hoffmann in honour of his commitment resulting in him being killed in action. It is dated to June 5, 1943 and carries a facsimile of the Leader of U-boats West, Captain at Sea Hans-Rudolf Rösing (1905–2004), a recipient of the Knight’s Cross. The death notice is dated to April 7, 1943, the sender who signed in blue ink is the Commander of the 6th U-boat Flotilla, Corvette Captain Wilhelm Schulz (1906–1986), a recipient of the Knight’s Cross and survivor of two U-boat sinkings. The letter was sent to Hoffmann’s father, regrettably notifying him that since no further news about his son had emerged, he was declared dead on October 28, 1942. Both documents measuring ca. 210x300mm, near very fine condition with scuffing and creasing, two folding creases, and a small hole where the creases meet.
