Two award certificates to Alfred Lorenz, 21 x 29.6 / 14.7 x 21 cm. Date of items: 1943. Condition: good, with folding marks and repaired hole punches.
The first certificate to Hauptwachtmeister der Schutzpolizei (principal sergeant of the uniformed police) Alfred Lorenz states that “in the name of the German people” he is awarded the “Medaille für die deutsche Volkspflege” (Medal of Social Welfare), a civil award created by Hitler in 1939. It was a replacement for the no longer issued Red Cross award, the lesser version of the Social Welfare Decoration. The certificate is awarded by “Der Führer”, with a facsimile signature of Hitler and Chief of the Office of the President of the Reich, Otto Meissner (1880–1953), date: Berlin, April 1st, 1943.
The second certificate is awarded “in the name of the Führer” in Belgrade, Dec 21st, 1943. Still “Hauptwachtmeister der Schutzpolizei”, Alfred Lorenz is identified as part of the 3./Hipo Rgt.2, the 3rd Battalion of the Auxiliary Police (Hipo = Hilfspolizei) Regiment 2. These police regiments were established to keep the peace in the occupied regions and to fight partisans. Lorenz is awarded the Kriegsverdienstkreuz (War Merit Cross) 2nd class with swords by SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Polizei (SS Group Leader and Lieutenant-General of Police = Higher SS and Police Leader), August Meyszner (1886-1947). Meyszner, appointed to Serbia in 1942, bore visceral hatred and distrust towards the Serbs. He oversaw regular reprisal killings. After the war, he was extradited to Yugoslavia, tried for war crimes, and hanged in 1947.
