Eichhorn participated in the Polish Campaign in 1939 as part of the SS Division Totenkopf. In early 1940 he was involved in the formation of the 5th SS Pionier (Sapper) Battalion 5 in the newly formed division “Wiking”. He received his Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on Jan 15th, 1943 as SS-Hauptsturmführer and Captain of Staff of the SS Sapper Battalion 5 of the 5th SS Mechanized Infantry Division “Wiking” for holding off an attack of a Soviet regiment. He was severely wounded in Sep 1943. After his recovery he took command of the SS Sapper Training and Reserve Battalion in Dresden, which he kept until the end of the war. This is why on the picture his rank is given as an SS-Obersturmbannführer der Reserve (of the reserve).
