Footnote:Günter Wanhöfer (1916-2015) was born in Berlin. He joined the HJ in 1932 and the SS in 1935. He was placed in the Sapper unit Pionier-Sturmbann SS/VT with which he participated in the attack on Poland as part of the 10th Army. Between March and June of 1940, Wanhöfer learned at the SS Junker School Bad Tölz, then took a Platoon Leader course in Dachau. He then became a Platoon Leader in the Sapper Battalion of SS Division “Das Reich”. In December of 1940, Wanhöfer was redeployed to the SS Division “Wiking” where he became 2nd platoon leader in the 1st Company of the Sapper Battalion, with which he went on to fight on the Eastern Front. There he was wounded several times, for example near Narva in February of 1944, receiving a Wound Badge in Silver. Wanhöfer went on to become Commander of the SS Sapper Battalion 11 in the 11th SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division “Nordland”. He received the Knight’s Cross on August 27, 1944 as Commander of the SS Sapper Battalion 54 of the 4th Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division “Nederland”. At the end of the war, he lead the SS Sapper Battalion 23 in the 23rd SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division “Nederland”, fighting in the Courland pocket, where he was taken prisoner by the Red Army.
