Footnote: Luis Trenker (1892–1990), born Alois Franz Trenker, is from the South Tyrol region, at the time of his birth part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, modern day Italy. He fought in the First World War in Galicia (modern day Poland) and in the mountain war against Italy, ending the war in the rank of Lieutenant. His acting and directing career started in the early 1920s. Many of his films exploited the idea of a life in connection to one’s home and roots, which the Nazis tried to use as part of their propaganda. To avoid having to succumb to government pressure, Trenker eventually moved to Rome in 1940. In the 1950s and 60s, Trenker concentrated on making movies and writing books mostly about the regions of Tyrol, Austria, and his birthplace Southern Tyrol, now Italy.
