Measuring 87x137mm, near very fine condition with light scuffing and several creases. The picture postcard shows a very young SS man wearing a greatcoat. The insignia identify him as a member of the SS Standarte “Deutschland”. An interesting detail is the unusually placed national eagle emblem patch on the left side of the cap.
Footnote: The SS-Standarte “Deutschland” was formed in 1934 as SS-Standarte 2/VT. It was soon renamed SS-Standarte 1/VT. The Standarte received it’s honour name “Deutschland” at the Nuremberg Rally of 1935. It took part in the annexations of Austria and of the Sudetenland, as well as the one of Bohemia and Moravia. It saw action during the attack on Poland. After this campaign it was used to form the SS-Verfügungstruppe, later named “Das Reich”.
