The picture postcard shows Schmidt wearing the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves, the German Cross in Gold, the Clasp to the Iron Cross 1st Class, as well as the Iron Cross 1914 1st Class, a Tank Badge, and underneath the top of his Wound Badge 1918 in Black. On his ribbon bar are the Iron Cross 1914 2nd Class with Clasp, the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Hohenzollern with Swords, the Hindenburg Cross, the Eastern Front Medal, and two Long Service awards. On the reverse it states that the photo was taken in May of 1943. It remains unused. Measuring 89x138mm, near mint condition.
Footnote: Gustav Schmidt was born on April 24, 1894 in Carsdorf (present-day Karsdorf, eastern Germany). He served during the First War and was later taken over into the Reichswehr. During the Second War, he commanded the 19th Panzer Division. Schmidt received the Knight’s Cross on September 4, 1940 and the Oak Leaves on March 6, 1943. On August 7, 1943 he committed suicide to avoid being captured by Russian forces during the Belgorod-Kharkov Offensive Operation.
