Footnote: Egid Roidl was born to a Catholic family on 12 September 1919 in Vilshofen, Bavaria. He registered as a volunteer with the Wehrmacht on 19 January 1938, before performing his Reich Labour Service (RAD) commitment between 27 November 1938 amd 25 March 1939, leaving with the rank of Arbeitsmann. His Wehrmacht service period commenced on 1 April 1939, and Roidl officially enlisted in the Luftwaffe on 14 April, being sworn in on 25 April. From 14 April 1939 until 22 November 1944 he served with a variety of reconnaissance and bomber groups, with occasional career upgrades at Luftwaffe technical schools. A recipient of a number of awards, Roidl received, among decorations, the West Wall Medal (20 December 1940), the Bomber Flight Clasp, Silver Grade (20 November 1941), the Iron Cross, II Class (20 October 1941), the Transport and Glider Pilot Flight Clasp, Gold Grade (31 July 1943), and the Iron Cross, I Class (12 February 1944). Roidl survived the war and was discharged from Wehrmacht service on 2 May 1945.
