A Collection of Documents & a Thank-You card by Grand Admiral Dönitz
The wartime picture measures 204x254mm, near very fine with creasing and scratching of the surface, and a hole in each corner of original mounting. The post-war picture measures 126x177mm, mint condition. It is signed in black marker. The thank-you card measures 180x95mm, extremely fine condition with light creasing. It is signed in blue ink by Großadmiral a. D. (außer Dienst) (retired Grand Admiral) Dönitz. The card shows his address in Aumühle, northern Germany. He thanks somebody for wishing him a happy birthday. He says that he had to send so many thank-you cards that he was unable to have them handwritten. However, judging by his signature that looks rather scrawly, the card is probably from the 1970s, only a few years before Dönitz’s death, and his body was probably already in the process of deteriorating, which was likely the real reason he didn’t send out handwritten cards.
