Footnote: Helmut Paul Emil Wick (1915–1940) was a fighter ace who flew combat missions in France and Britain. He was promoted to Major and Geschwaderkommodore in October 1940, at the time the youngest to ever hold that position. He was also the leading fighter ace with 56 confirmed aerial victories. He received the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross in August 1940, earning the Oak Leaves in October 1940. He was only the 4th recipient of this award, the highest award for bravery at the time.
