A Wartime Signed Kreigsmarine Knight's Cross Winner Photo; Liebe - Black and white, matte finish, obverse signed, inscribed "Korvettenkapitän Liebe / Träger des Eichenlaubs zum Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes", numbered "R 189" in the lower left corner and photo credited "Sandau, Berlin" in the lower right corner, reverse with postcard-style backer, numbered "C 2235", manufactured by Verlag, Berlin SW 68, marked "feldpost", postmarked in Berlin on March 22, 1943, with postage stamp and Reich stamp, 104 mm 149 mm, soiled and surface wear on the reverse, near mint.Footnote: Commander Heinrich Liebe (January 29, 1908 – July 27, 1997) was a highly decorated German naval officer who served as a U-boat commander during the Second World War until transferred to Oberkommando der Kreigsmarine (German Navy High Command). He sank 34 ships for a total of 187,267 gross register tons (GRT), placing him fourth on the Aces of the Deep list. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. It was Germany's highest military decoration at the time of its presentation to Heinrich Liebe. After the war Liebe returned to his hometown in the Soviet sector to live with his parents. Since he refused to train Soviet submariners, he felt that was to blame for his being held to menial occupations. He died in July 1997 and is buried in Eisenach, Germany.
