Footnote: Erwin Paul Schneidler was born August 28, 1909 in Emmerstedt (today a part of Helmstedt, Lower Saxony). Before being drafted, he worked in a brick factory. Schneidler was first mustered in late 1939 and deemed fit for service. However, he was not placed in active service yet. This happened in June of 1942 when he was deployed to the Schützen Replacement Company 396. Between September and November, Schneidler served in the 2nd Company of the Technician Replacement/Training Detachment Pirna, and was then redeployed to the 2nd Company of the Technician Detachment 2 (motorized), renamed in early 1944 to 2nd Company of Technician Battalion (motorized) 2. On October 1, 1943 Schneidler was promoted to Oberpionier (Senior Sapper), and on August 1, 1944 to Gefreiter (Lance Corporal). He was exclusively fighting in defensive battles at the Eastern Front. Eventually, Schneidler was captured by enemy forces. The Wehrpaß contains an entry of his POW number, dated to September 1947.
