Germany, Imperial. A Medal from Mainz, c.1900
(Verdienstmedaille). A circular medal constructed of silver, the obverse bears a cloaked Wheel of Mainz on a shield, crowned at the top and held open on the left and right sides by ribbon ties, the reverse bears a wreath with the inscription “GLORIA VIRTUTIS COMES” (POWER COMES GLORY) in the centre, measuring 27.51 mm (w) x 36.66 mm (h), weighing 7.1 g, on a red ribbon, very fine.
