Germany. A 1916 “Gold for Iron” Medal
An example of a 1916 Imperial German Gold for Iron Medal; constructed of blackened metal; the obverse illustrating a rightward facing kneeling woman offering a gold necklace, inscribed “In Eiserner Zeit” above, and dated “1916” below; the reverse inscribed “Gold gab ich zur Wehr, Eisen nahm ich zur Ehr” (I gave gold for defence, took iron for honour), with oak leaves below, and maker marked “Hosaeus” on the bottom; measuring 40.57 mm in diameter; weighing 19.5 grams; light wear to the black paint; in overall extremely fine condition.
