Germany, Imperial. A 1914 Iron Cross I Class, Non-Magnetic Version in Silver, with Case
(Eisernes Kreuz I. Klasse mit Etui). Reinstituted 5 August 1914. (1914-1918 issue). Constructed of silver, consisting of a vaulted Cross Pattée with a black-painted non-magnetic metal core within a ribbed silver frame, the obverse with a central initial “W”, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1914”, the twelve o’clock arm with a royal crown, the reverse with an elongated barrel hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a round wire catch, stamped with a silver content number of “800”, measuring 43.53 mm (w) x 43.67 mm (h), weighing 17.7 grams, accompanied by its original presentation case, constructed of a wooden frame with a faux black leather exterior liner, the lid bearing a silvered depiction of the award, the interior with a padded white satin lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a slotted blue velvet medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release, unmarked, measuring 64 mm (w) x 64 mm (l) x 22 mm (h), moderate loss of finish is visible to the core in addition to some bending of the frame which itself displays a consistent patina, an unusual and privately-purchased example in overall better than very fine condition.
