Germany, Imperial. A 1914 Iron Cross II Class, with Case
(Eisernes Kreuz 1914 II. Klasse mit Etui). Reinstituted 5 August 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. (1914-1918 issue). Constructed of iron and silver, on loop for suspension from its period original tri-fold ribbon, consisting of a Cross Pattée with a blackened magnetic iron core within a ribbed silver frame, the obverse with a central initial “W”, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1914”, the twelve o’clock arm with a royal crown, the reverse with three central oak leaves, the six o’clock arm with an initial institution date of “1813”, the twelve o’clock arm with initials “FW” topped by a royal crown, unmarked, measuring 44.46 mm (w) x 47.68 mm (h), weighing 19.4 grams (inclusive of ribbon), accompanied by a rare type of customized presentation case (for trifold style ribbon), constructed of a wooden frame with a faux maroon leather liner, the interior with a padded white satin lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a depressed white felt medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release, unmarked, measuring 80 mm (w) x 120 mm (l) x 25 mm (h), the ribbon demonstrating significant fraying and minor material fatigue is evident to the case, with the catch lock no longer functioning, a Third Reich period example manufactured in Austria c.1925 (probably by Zimbler), in overall better than very fine condition. A very rare case for a trifold Austrian ribbon.
