Germany, Imperial. A 1914 Kaiser Wilhelm II Patriotic Silver Medal
(Patriotischer Medaille in Silber). Constructed of silver, the obverse bearing a raised rightward-facing profile of Kaiser Wilhelm II, circumscribed by an inscription of “ICH KENNE KEINE PARTEIEN MEHR, ICH KENNE NUR DEUTSCHE” (“I KNOW NOT OF PARTIES ANYMORE, I KNOW ONLY OF GERMANS”), with a date of “4. 8. 1914”, the reverse bearing a central raised sword topped by a date of “1914”, flanked by an inscription of “IN AUFGEDRUNGENER NOTWEHR MIT REINEM GEWISSEN UND REINER HAND ERGREIFEN WIR DAS SCHWERT” (“IN SELF-DEFENCE AND WITH A CLEAR CONSCIENCE AND PURE HAND WITH SEIZE THE SWORD”), the edge marked “SILBER” and with a content number of “990”, the reverse marked “GRÜNTHAL”, measuring 34.55 mm in diameter, weighing 18.5 grams, in near extremely fine condition.
