Germany, Imperial. A 1915/1916 Ettlingen War Victims Plaque
(Kriegsinvaliden Erinnerungsplakette). A unique and finely-detailed First War commemorative plaque, constructed of a silvered and patinated bronze centrepiece set within a lacquered black wooden frame. The plaque consists of a crowned Prussian imperial eagle emerging in a 3-D effect, clutching a banner in its talons bearing an inscription of “ERINNERUNG AN GROSSE ZEIT” (“IN MEMORY OF GREAT TIMES”), The eagle is set above a stylized stone memorial bearing an etched inscription of “GEWIDMET VON DEN KRIEGSINVALIDEN DER ZUSCHNEIDESCHULE ETTLINGEN 1915/1916” (“DEDICATED TO THE WAR VICTIMS OF ZUSCHNEIDESCHULE ETTLINGEN 1915/1916”). This is followed by a list of eight names, which are presumably students or staff of the aforementioned tailoring school. The memorial appears on top of a battle-scarred landscape, and is set above a banner bearing an inscription of “MIT GOTT FÜR KÖNIG UND VATERLAND” (“WITH GOD FOR KING AND FATHERLAND”). Fully unmarked, the plaque measures 415 mm (w) x 485 mm (h), inclusive of frame. Issues consistent with age are evident, and include chipping and scratching of the frame, with some fatigue to the backer and minor loss of finish to the centrepiece.
