Germany, Imperial. A 1916 Medal for Berlin War Relief Volunteers by Constantin Starck
(Erinnerungsmedaille für Freiwilliger). Constructed of patinated magnetic metal, the obverse with a robed female figure dousing a fire, flanked by an inscription of “EDEL SEI DER MENSCH, HILFREICH UND GUT” (“LET MAN BE NOBLE, HELPFUL, AND GOOD”), the reverse with an “FUER OPFERWILLIGE HILFELEISTUNG AN IHREN MITBUERGEN IN SCHWERER KRIEGSZEIT DIE STADT BERLIN” (“FOR HELPFUL SERVICES TO YOUR FELLOWS CITIZENS IN THE DIFFICULT TIME OF WAR IN THE CITY OF BERLIN”), topped by a laurel wreath and above a Berlin-style heraldic bear, the obverse maker marked “CS” for Constantin Starck, Berlin, measuring 60 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition.
