Germany, Imperial. A Military Messenger Pigeon Silver Merit Medal, with Case
(Militär-Brieftaubenwesen Medaille in Silber mit Etui). Constructed of silver, the obverse bearing a raised rightward-facing profile of Kaiser Wilhelm II, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse bearing a central messenger pigeon flying over a fortress and city landscape, circumscribed by an inscription of “FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DAS MILITAIR-BRIEFTAUBENWESEN” (“FOR MERIT IN MILITARY MESSENGER PIGEON REARING”), the obverse designer marked “E. WEIGAND F.”, measuring 41.14 mm in diameter, weighing 32.6 grams, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a light wooden frame with a faux purple leather exterior liner, the interior with a red rayon lid liner, intact hinge cover, and depressed maroon felt medal bid, opening with a functional metal swivel hinge, unmarked, measuring 68 mm (w) x 68 mm (l) x 20 mm (h), with a small dent evident to the edge of the medal and slight material fatigue to the case, in near extremely fine condition.
