Germany, Imperial. A Military Messenger Pigeon Silver Merit Medal, with Case
(Silberne Medaille für Verdienste um das Militär-Brieftaubenwesen mit Etui). Instituted 1893 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. (1893-1911 issue). Constructed of silver, the obverse bearing a raised and rightward-facing profile of Kaiser Wilhelm II, flanked by a monogram and set within a laurel wreath, the reverse bearing a raised depiction of a pigeon flying over a fortress with a cityscape in the background, circumscribed by an inscription of “FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DAS MILITAIR-BRIEFTAUBENWESEN” (“FOR MERIT IN MILITARY MESSENGER PIGEON SERVICES”), unmarked, measuring 41.10 mm in diameter, weighing 32.6 grams, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a light wooden frame with a faux black leather exterior liner, the interior with a padded beige cotton lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a depressed beige felt medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release, unmarked, measuring 65 mm (w) x 64 mm (l) x 20 mm (h), with only slight material fatigue evident to the case, in overall extremely fine condition.
