Germany, Imperial. A Prussian Observer’s Badge, c. 1917
(Beobachterabzeichen). Constructed of silvered brass with multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of an oval laurel and oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, topped by a German State Crown, around a central enameled applique consisting of a black and white checkered centrepiece trimmed with a red border, situated atop a ribbed background, the reverse with a narrow barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting a flat wire catch, unmarked, measuring 45.17 mm (w) x 71.12 mm (h), weighing 19.2 grams, in extremely fine condition.
