Germany, Imperial. A Rare Merit Cross for War Assistance in Aluminum
(Verdienstkreuz Kriegshilfdienst). Instituted 5 December 1916 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. (1916-1924 issue). Constructed of aluminum, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, consisting of a Maltese Cross with pebbled arms, the obverse with a central monogram of Kaiser Wilhelm III, the reverse with an inscription of “FÜR KRIEGS-HILFDIENST” (“FOR WAR ASSISTANCE”), unmarked, measuring 42.69 mm (w) x 42.98 mm (w), weighing 8.1 grams (inclusive of ribbon), a rare aluminum version in extremely fine condition.
