The War Commemorative Medal mentioned in the document is made of steel, which was the version for non-combatants, as opposed to the bronze version for combatants, yet in the document it is stated that the recipient received a combatant ribbon. The recipient is Oberstleutnant (Lieutenant Colonel) of the Artillery, Karl Ludwig Friese, Commander of Replacement Battalion of the East Prussian Field Artillery Regiment No. 1. The document is dated to Königsberg (present-day Kaliningrad, Russia) on August 1, 1871. It is signed in black ink on behalf of the commanding General by a Lieutenant General, the name is illegible. Military personnel stationed in Germany, performing their duty under difficult circumstances could be awarded with the non-combatant version of the medal. The document measures 300x232mm, very fine condition with folding creases, light scuffing, and three minor tears.
