Germany, Imperial. A Field-Made Eastern Front Postcard with Trench Art Sign
(Feldpostkarte mit Grabenkunst Zeichen). A field-made First World War Eastern Front postcard, constructed of a single piece of birch bark, the obverse bearing a Feldpost stamped dated “13. 2. 15” and stamped of Landwehr-Sanitätskompanie Nr. 19 (9. Armee) addressed to “FRAU JOSEFINE BRIETZKY” of Berlin, the reverse bearing an inscription of “ZUM ANDENKEN FELDZUG IN RUSSICH-POLEN 1914/15. HERZLICHEN GRUSS, DEIN PAUL” (“IN MEMORY OF THE CAMPAIGN IN RUSSIAN POLAND 1914/15. HEARTFELT GREETINGS, YOUR PAUL”), and dated “13. 2. 15.” in Swidno, measuring 135 mm (w) x 90 mm (h), in extremely fine condition, and; a trench art sign, constructed of a piece of white birch bark within a wooden frame secured together with magnetic metal rivets, topped by a magnetic metal suspension loop, the bark bearing a painted Iron Cross and Imperial German standards flanked by dates of “1914-1915”, with an inscription of “ANDENKEN AUS RUSSLAND’S WÄLDERN DEN 10. 9. 15.” (“MEMENTO OF RUSSIA’S FORESTS 10. 9. 15.”), measuring 175 mm (w) x 140 mm (h) overall, the birch has split in the middle and been reinforced along the reverse with tape, in very fine condition.
