Baden, Grand Duchy. A 1. Leib-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 9 Enlisted Personnel Pickelhaube

(Baden Pickelhaube für Mannschaften der 1. Leib-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 9). A well-preserved Baden 1. Leib-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 9 Enlisted personnel Pickelhaube, constructed of a black vulcan fibre shell. Situated atop the crown is a spike constructed of non-magnetic metal and perforated around the neck with ventilation holes, and which is secured in place with a baseplate featuring four magnetic metal rivets. A magnetic metal bar emanates from the back of the baseplate and extends down to a boiled and blackened leather neck guard. Riveted to the peak is an insignia consisting of a silvered bronze plate in the form of a Baden griffin clutching a sword and shield bearing a national emblem, above a banner bearing an inscription of “MIT GOTT F. FUERST U. VATERLAND” (“WITH GOD FOR PRINCE AND FATHERLAND”), and pinned with an eight-pointed starburst, in turn overlaid by a Maltese Cross with a monogram centrepiece. The plate measures 16.5 cm (w) x 9.5 cm (h) overall. It is flanked on each side by magnetic metal studs which secure in place a black leather chinstrap, adjusted with dual functional magnetic metal buckles. Situated beneath the studs are magnetic metal cockades, with the left side painted in a Baden yellow and red motif, while the right side is painted in an Imperial red, white, and black colour scheme. The exterior features are completed with a protruding boiled and blackened leather visor, reinforced along the edge with a magnetic metal bar. The interior retains a black leather liner, culminating in nine fingers, each perforated at the top with an eyelet for the accommodation of a drawstring which has been lost to time. A size mark of “55” is stamped onto the crown, while a stamped mark of “JR170” on the reverse of the neck guard indicates that the Pickelhaube was originally issued to 9. Badisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 170. It measures approximately 18.5 cm (w) x 24 cm (l) x 20 cm (h) (inclusive of spike). In addition to replacement of the insignia issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some fatigue of the vulcan fibre and deterioration of the interior liner. It is in an overall very fine condition.
