Germany, Imperial. A Patriotic "Iron Cup", c.1915
A cup constructed of magnetic steel from enemy projectiles with a bronze ring a third of the way down from the top, the ring bears two medallions on either side: one with the right facing bust of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and the other with the right facing bust of Kaiser Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary, inscribed with their names to the left of their busts, the portraits are marked “A. MARSCHALL”, there are two thin strips between the portraits, one reads “1914 Kriegs Becher 1915” (1914 War Mug 1915), the other strip reads “Den eisernen Becher, den pollen, meiht Den eisernen Helden der eisernen Zeit!” (The iron cup, the full one, consecrates the iron hero of the iron time!), the strips bear pearled borders, the bottom of the cup bears a small bear, measuring 150 mm (h), 245 mm (circumference at widest point), very fine.
