Germany, Imperial. A 1914 Iron Cross I Class, Clamshell Screwback Version, with Case
(Eisernes Kreuz 1914 I. Klasse an Schraubscheibe mit Etui). Reinstituted 5 August 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. (1914-1918 issue). Constructed of iron and silver, consisting of a slightly vaulted Cross Pattée with a blackened magnetic iron core within a ribbed silver frame, the obverse with a central initial “W”, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1914”, the twelve o’clock arm with a royal crown, the reverse with a central threaded lug connecting to an original clamshell backplate, the twelve o’clock arm bearing a stabilizing pin, unmarked, measuring 44.24 mm (w) x 44.17 mm (h), weighing 18.1 grams (inclusive of backplate), accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a light wooden frame with a faux black leather exterior liner, the lid bearing a silvered and embossed Cross Pattée, the interior with a white satin lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a depressed black velvet medal bed, closing with a functional spring catch with exterior stud release, unmarked, measuring 68 mm (w) x 68 mm (l) x 25 mm (h), with minor oxidation and moderate material fatigue visible to the core and the case, respectively, in near extremely fine condition.
