(Deutsches Kaiserreich Abzeichen). A pair of Imperial German medals, including a 1914 Iron Cross I Class, constructed of iron and silver, consisting of a blackened magnetic iron core within a ribbed silver frame, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a central initial “W”, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1914”, the twelve o’clock arm with a royal crown, the reverse with three central oak leaves, the six o’clock arm with an initial institution date of “1813”, the twelve o’clock arm with initials of “FW” topped by a royal crown, unmarked, measuring 43.59 mm (w) x 47.75 mm (h), weighing 17.7 grams, in near extremely fine condition, and; a War Commemorative Medal for 1813/1814, constructed of bronze, on loop for suspension, the obverse with a Cross Pattée with radiant designs in the quadrants of the arms, with central dates “1813-1814” within a laurel and oak wreath, the reverse with a central monogram of Friedrich Wilhelm II above an inscription of “Preußens tapferen Kriegern” (“Prussia’s Brave Warriors”), circumscribed by an inscription of “Gott war mitt uns, Ihm sey die Ehre!” (“God was with us, to Him the honour!”), the edge inscribed “AUS EROBERTEM GESCHÜTZ” (“FROM CONQUERED CANNON”), indicating that the medal was cast from a melted-down French cannon, unmarked, measuring 29.16 mm in diameter, weighing 14.8 grams, in near extremely fine condition.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
