Two 1916 German “Iron for Gold” donation coins; in blackened iron; maker marked “Hermann Haseaus” on obverse; measuring 40 mm in diameter.
Footnote: “Gold gab ich zur Wehr, Eisen nahm ich zur Ehr” (I gave gold in defence, and took iron in glory) was a wartime slogan that called German citizens to donate gold and jewelry to finance the war. In return, the donors received these honorary coins. Although donating gold was a voluntary action, there was social pressure to do so - Who wore the iron jewelry had proven to be a patriot, who wore more gold, lost prestige.
